Teaser Tuesday #52

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Out of Africa

Summary:

Out of Africa is Isak Dinesen's memoir of her years in Africa, from 1914 to 1931, on a four-thousand-acre coffee plantation in the hills near Nairobi. She had come to Kenya from Denmark with her husband, and when they separated she stayed on to manage the farm by herself, visited frequently by her lover, the big-game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, for whom she would make up stories "like Scheherazade." In Africa, "I learned how to tell tales," she recalled many years later. "The natives have an ear still. I told stories constantly to them, all kinds." Her account of her African adventures, written after she had lost her beloved farm and returned to Denmark, is that of a master storyteller, a woman whom John Updike called "one of the most picturesque and flamboyant literary personalities of the century."

We could not know, and could not imagine, what the dangers were that they feared from our hands. I myself think that they were afraid of us more in the manner in which you are afraid of a terrific noise, than as you are afraid of suffering and death.

  2. OMG This is my favorite of all time Movies and one of my favorite books ever.
Thanks for showcasing this classic to make us remember to re-read an old friend once in a while instead of always focusing on the Just Released Shelves

  3. I love the way she describes fear. I can understand it too. They see death all the time in Africa, so I get why use the phrase she used.

  4. Great teaser! This is a classic that I overlooked but really should read. I'm pretty sure I saw the movie but that was awhile ago and there's a slight chance I'm getting it mixed up with Hepburn's African Queen. Enjoy your book!

    1. Yeah, this one was made with Streep and Redford in the '80s. I haven't seen it yet but I might watch it tonight. It's a lovely read. It's an interesting look at life in African in the early 1900s.
